In July 2025, an impersonator used an AI-generated voice clone of Secretary of State Marco Rubio to contact foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a member of Congress through Signal. The State Department opened an investigation. The voicemails were convincing enough to require official government-wide advisories to foreign partners. No sensitive information was extracted in that instance, but the same technique has been deployed successfully in financial operations.
